Tips For A Tourist Driving In Miami

Miami is a popular tourist destination, with thousands of people visiting the area each year. Visitors from abroad and nationals enjoy the lively vibe of the city. Popular for its stunning beaches, Miami is the ultimate party city the golden sun never sets in this happening place!
If you’re visiting Miami, you need a rental to truly get the experience of a lifetime. Driving by the beautiful beaches and colorful buildings has its own charm.
Here are some tips for those planning on driving around Miami on their vacation:

Miami’s Highways

For those new to the area, here are the main highways in the city:
· Florida’s Turnpike
· Dolphin Expressway (835)
· Airport Expressway
These are toll roads. Whereas the Palmetto Expressway is toll-free; drivers must pay the fee via their SunPass.

SunPass Toll System

This electronic prepaid tolling system is used all over Florida. A device known as the SunPass Portable transponder is placed inside the windshield of the car. The device communicated via radio frequency with the toll plaza.
The toll charges are automatically deducted from your account when you go through the Sun Pass lane. Transponders can easily be found at local pharmacies and supermarkets. An account can easily be activated via their website.
If you’re using a rental car in Miami, ask the company about their toll payment policy. Car rental companies charge a nominal fee for using their SunPass.

Using the I-95 Express lanes

For northbound traveling, the I-95 lane is the fastest option. You beat heavy traffic and it’s more convenient to use. To use this lane you need a SunPass transponder, a hybrid vehicle, or should be carpooling. When using a rented car, purchasing a PlatePass at the agency location makes you eligible to use that lane.
Once you’re in the express lane, there isn’t an exit option for at least 7 miles. Drivers can’t stop in this lane too. Drivers must stay within the plastic poles, driving between or around them isn’t allowed.

Parking in Miami

Miami is a large city so it’s common to have to pay for parking wherever you go. Rates applied can vary from neighborhood to neighborhood and how long you plan on parking your car.
The Miami Parking Authority is vigilant with all public parking spaces Downtown. The easiest way to pay for parking is via the Pay by Phone app. The same app is used in City of Coral Gables too!
The City of Miami Beach overlooks the parking at South Beach and its surrounding areas. Be vigilant about the signs in the area. Street signs indicate whether the parking is for residents or public. When visiting Miami Beach, use the ParkMe – Miami Beach App. It shows you empty spots where you could park.
