Why Can’t I Find a Four Wheel Drive to Rent?

Though the general assumption might be that four wheel drive vehicles are a hot favorite at car rental companies, this is only true from a customer’s standpoint. For the rental company however, it’s another story.
You might be under the impression that finding a four wheel drive to rent on short notice won’t be a hassle at all. Those who have had to go about the business or renting a four wheel drive before however, know that in reality, things are a little less hassle free.

Why I Can’t Find a Four Wheel Drive to Rent

There are a number of reasons, mostly logistical which contribute to a dearth of four wheel drive vehicles in the car rental market. Though most car rental companies will offer clients and customers four wheel drive vehicles on their websites and when they advertise.
In reality this is more a way to provide internal flexibility in case a four wheel drive from an otherwise limited fleet does show up at said location. Having it on the menu gives them the option to rent it out.
What you may be wondering now, is why having four wheel drives on the fleet is a bit of a hassle for most car rental companies. Even if a rental company claims to offer four wheel drive vehicles, whether or not they will be able to deliver in a timely fashion is questionable.

The Problem with Four Wheel Drive Vehicles

As we said earlier, the trouble with four wheel drive vehicles is not on the client end but on the operational logistics end.
For starters, four wheel drive vehicles tend to be a lot more costly than other vehicles. This is not just on purchase but also by way of maintenance. What is even worse for car rental companies is that for the most part, four wheel drive vehicles fall behind when it comes to resale value.
When it comes to locations like Florida, most day to day customers (not counting the ones looking for rentals during peak season) prefer to go for two wheel drive models. This is because the roads and climate in the region are both well suited to two wheel drive vehicles unlike say up in the mountains by a Ski resort.
The reasons above are why most car rental services, particularly those around the Florida region do not always have an extensive and available fleet of four wheel drive vehicles.

What if I Want One in Florida?

Though most car rental companies might not be able to offer you four wheel drive vehicles, there are some car rental companies operating in the area with reliable four wheel drive car rental services. When we say reliable, we mean no cancellations, no last minute calls asking you if you would prefer another vehicle and no delays!
Orange Rent A Car is one such company, offering clients and customers luxury car rental options including four wheel drive vehicles in Miami – Florida and surrounding areas. Companies such as these have the infrastructure to support an available fleet of four wheel drive vehicles. If you’re visiting during peak season or otherwise, it’s best to rent from a company you know will have the car you want!
