The “Greening” of the Rental Car Industry

The car rental industry has grown exponentially in the U.S. as well as in other parts of the world in the last few years. As with any growing industry, growth is not just about making money and covering more area. It is about aspiring to and meeting shifting standards of quality and excellence.
One of the things that is quickly becoming a requirement with regards to many industries, transportation included is being environment friendly, (aka going green). Like all others, the car rental industry too is now expected to meet these standards and has been trying to in their own way.

What the Industry Does to Go Green

Though all car rental companies do not prioritize being environment friendly, others are simply waiting on the right time to make the kind of changes they feel would be helpful.

There are also many car rental companies both big and small who have already made numerous changes both by way of their services and fleet as well as by way of their internal operations.
Big or small, any change in the way of the environment is a good thing and here’s how the car rental industry has been doing its bit.

Higher Fuel Efficiency

One of the things many companies have been doing is making sure that along with the usual fun stuff, their fleets offer clients cars such as minivans with higher fuel efficiency. Further, even vehicles that are known to use larger amounts of fuel such as SUVs and large sedans are well maintained and tuned.
Keeping a car tuned and oiled properly allows for it to deliver more mileage per gallon which is helpful when it comes to being environmentally mindful.

Electrical Cars

There are companies who have gone all out and added electrical or hybrid vehicles to their fleets. These vehicles end up costing less overall when it comes to fuel consumption. More importantly, greenhouse gas emissions by hybrids and electrical vehicles are far less than those emitted by those cars that run exclusively on fossil fuels.

Extensive incorporation of hybrid cars into fleets is yet another way the industry has been moving towards greener policies. This however has yet to be adopted extensively.

Doing Their Bit

Many car rental companies apart from one or both of the above also ensure they do their bit within the organization as well. This means the adoption of greener office policies. Office recycling programs, waste reduction programs and eco-sustainability programs are not uncommon.

Further, many car rental companies do their bit by way of CSR as well by supporting local green programs that might be in need to logistical or financial backing.

Conclusion

Going green in the car rental industry and in other industries too has been a slow process yet it is good to know that changes are being made and so is progress. It is to everyone’s benefit that we look after the environment as this world is pretty much the only one we’ve got. As they say; you don’t need a superpower to be a hero—just go green!
